| Case Studies in Clinical Medicine
|
Windows |
| This suite of programs was developed for use by medical undergraduates in their clinical years. The CAL material covers a range of topics including hypercalcaemia, neonatology and cervical screening. They form part of an ongoing development of the application of multi-media CAL to medical teaching at Aberdeen. The standards and format are identical to the Toolbook teaching programs used in the pre-clinical years at Aberdeen. This facilitates the exchange of material between pre-clinical & clinical teaching and ease of undergraduate use throughout the medical curriculum. The cervical screening program requires the use of the Pathology laser disk. One of the short programs, the ELISA tutor, was developed and written by a medical undergraduate and clearly illustrates the ease with which CAL material can be created with Toolbook. |

| Fractal Tree
|
Mac |
| Target audience: First year biologists studying Introductory Plant Science. Fractal Tree is a nice little application which uses the principle of fractal geometry to draw tree like shapes. By modifying the characteristics of the basic unit; length, width, number of branches, amount of bending one can create models of different species of tree and bush, thus illustrating the fact that plant form is based on simple repeated units. Fractal Tree is used as a visual aid in appropriate lectures. The software is available as 'freeware' and runs on the all Macintosh family of computers. The use of Fractal Tree in lectures is greatly enhanced with the aid of an overhead projection tablet or similar visual aid linked to your computer. If you are looking for something to bring the teaching of plant form and structure to life Fractal tree would be worth investigating. |

| Genetics & Mapping
|
Mac Windows |
| A Toolbook & Hypercard Stack Simulation. These programs were developed for use by biology undergraduates studying genetics. The first part of the program, Genetics, takes undergraduates through the basic principles of Mendelian genetics, monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, and the derivation of the resultant phenotypes. The basics of meiosis are outlined and how this relates to the generation of random assortment. Variations on the classic 9:3:3:1 ratios are included to show how different phenotypic ratios are derived under conditions of gene interaction. The second part of the program, Mapping, is a short tutorial on how to perform three factor crosses, determine gene order, distance and the effects of interference. |
